Sending a Mail/Care Package

You should plan that any mail you send will be inspected by Mid-Atlantic Regional Office staff. However, marking it “special,” means that the mail you send can only be opened with the inmate in the room, so the prison staff could not take anything out without the inmate’s knowledge.

You can also inquire at the prison if the inmate you are looking for as access to an email account; some inmates at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Office can now use email.

Sending Money

There are a few different ways you can send money to be added to an inmate’s commissary account.

While you cannot send cash or checks, you can send a money order through the mail. Make the inmate’s full name and eight digit register number are listed on the money order to ensure it reaches the right inmate.

A quick and easy way to get money to an inmate is by Money gram. Sending funds this way will be accessible to an inmate within hours. To get set up call 301-317-3100 or go to the Money gram website to get an account setup.

You can also send money through Western Union if you have the inmate's eight digit register number with no spaces or dashes and the inmate's last name (example: 12345678DOE). You can set an account up at Western Union by calling 1-800-634-3422 or by visiting the Western Union website.

Phone calls

If you’d like your inmate to call you, you should make sure you add money to his commissary account. While you cannot call an inmate at Mid-Atlantic Regional Office, you can help make sure he has enough money to call you.

Make sure you can locate your inmate. Once the inmate adds you to his visitor’s list, you can work the process of getting approved for a visit. Then you can plan ahead to schedule a visit and make sure you are prepared with what to wear and what you can and cannot bring into a federal prison when visiting.
